Every week the staff of Dare Dreamer FM picks five Creative Commons songs that are free to use in your productions. You could do this work yourself, but it takes a lot of time. Since we do it anyway as we look for CC music for Radio Film School, we share our favorite discoveries with you. Enjoy!
This Week’s Picks
Is it just me, or does “chamber music” sound unappealing? No worries in this case! This piece originates with the late Dumitru Bughici, a Romanian composer of contemporary classical music. Simplicity and sophistication come together, since Bughici retains influence from the greats, and FMA tags those gurus. I can’t help but think of my proud-to-be-Romanian Middlebury film professor who taught a class on Romanian film! Serious in tone, this modern classical piece opens with a piano theme that may accompany drama, if one were to pick a film genre. The theme runs throughout the track, joined by multiple violins and violas and quickly culminating rather early in the track. Despite the harmonious parts the track remains disjointed, with good reason, as a spoken word emerges to enhance the eeriness and Anglo-Saxon atmosphere. CC BY-NC 4.0
When Lee Rosevere names his compilation “Music for Podcasts” he’s not joking. Here’s a selection from his greatly useful album. It relies on engaging audio panning throughout as its basis, and the rest of the layers culminate in a steady, consistent fashion perfect for complementing voiceovers. CC BY-SA 4.0
With folk influences not uncommon to the prolific Jahzzar, who we featured in episode of Radio Film School, this track demonstrates the range that those folksy roots can take. Upon hitting play I automatically pictured True Detective and the deep south–powerful imagery. There is something sinister and lonesome, but beautiful, in the deep chorus and drums, and the bright guitar softens that palette and makes for a more versatile track. CC BY-SA 3.0
Here is a fitting complement to the folk feel of the previous Jahzzar selection: a comforting blues hymn from the forties, complete with that authentic vinyl crackling effect. Whether you choose to follow the pastoral lyrics or overlay them with talk radio, the Trumpeteers will keep up the steady chorale. A humble, no-frills blues tune for inspired but relaxed occasions.
