Fans have grown to love Kazuma and cheer him on in his quest to defeat the Demon King, who sought to oppress the free people of the fantasy world.

With so many key plot elements left on a cliff-hanger, most noticeably Kazuma and Megumin’s relationship, fans will undoubtedly be eager to see Konosuba season 3 announced sooner rather than later!

Konosuba Season 3

Are we Likely to See Konosuba Season 3 Announced in the Near Future?

With no announcement in the pipeline, we have to look around for clues as to whether or not Konosuba will return for its eagerly anticipated season three.

Of course, fans could take to reading the storyline in the popular light novels, but with so much added to the story since it has been brought to life on our screens, fans can be forgiven for wanting more of the animated TV series.

To understand the likelihood of Konosuba season 3 being announced, we can look at some of the other popular anime series and see how they developed across the seasons.

One noticeable difference between Konosuba and other anime series, though, is the fact that Konosuba was brought to our screens from light novels, whereas many more traditional anime shows emerged from source material such as mobile games, visual novels, or manga.

Ample Source Material for Konosuba Season 3

Ample Source Material for Konosuba Season 3

In some respects, Air Gear is similar in source material to Konosuba, but no second series has been announced of yet. Likewise, another light novel, No Game No Life season 2 has not been announced, but that is quite probably due to the fact that there is no source material left to use, and the producers may have run out of ideas of how to progress the series any further.

Of course, all fans know that this is not the case with Konosuba, and in fact, there is a considerable amount of source material remaining in the light novels, which makes Konosuba season 3 a strong possibility.

To date, there have been seventeen light novel volumes of Konosuba released in Japan, and we have also seen some spin-off series and even a manga adaptation of the anime series.

Perhaps the most well-known spin-off is about Megumin, Kazuma’s love interest, and her time as a student alongside her close friend Yunyun, in the days before the main Konosuba series took place.

Konosuba is still ongoing, but the main series ended with volume 17, the last of which was written by Natsume Akatsuki and released in Japan on May 1st, 2020.

Presently, the on-screen series is continuing and Akatsuki has announced that he will continue writing more Konosuba stories in the future, owing to the show’s immense popularity among its fans.

Since Konosuba first arrived on our screens in 2016, volumes 1-2 of the light novels were covered in season one, and volumes 3-4 were covered in season two.

The whole of light novel five was covered in the popular movie entitled Kurenai Densetsu, meaning that the source material from light novel six will be aired next.

Overall, it’s evident that there is more than enough source material from the light novels to create several more animated series, beginning with Konosuba season 3! The downside, however, is the fact that once all of the current source material has been produced, there are no more light novels, which isn’t good news for a potential sequel.

However, with author Akatsuki stating that he plans to continue writing, we could see more material produced in the coming years, which is great news for Konosuba fans.

Potential Profitability of Konosuba Season 3

Due to its relatively short season length, with just ten episodes per season, Konosuba is predicted to be less expensive to produce than other similar anime series.

Having said that, it is likely that ten episodes of Konosuba will cost 2million USD to produce, meaning the producers will have to find a suitable budget if they are to create the much desired Konosuba Season 3.

As with all anime series, and actually all TV shows in general, the most important factor to consider is its profitability. We know that Konosuba season 3 would be immensely popular with its fans, but would it be profitable?

We know that, generally speaking, anime series tend to drop between 10 – 20% in regards to their profitability when compared to their previous season’s figures, which is a worrying reality for the industry. To take a specific example, Noragami Season 3 has yet to be produced because the second season dipped in profitability when compared with season one.

Konosuba Sales in Numbers

Konosuba Sales in Numbers

If we look at the figures from the sales of seasons one and two of Konosuba on Blue-Ray, we can see that the trend of anime seasons doing considerably worse as they progress is not such a problem.

Season one sold approximately 12,000 copies per disk, whereas season two sold approximately 11,000 copies. Although a slight reduction, it isn’t alarming, considering in 2019, the majority of anime series would be happy with selling 10,000 copies on Blue-Ray.

Given the way in which people watch shows is changing, with many people preferring online streaming services to traditional blue-ray and DVD, these figures are not as relevant in 2020, but successful sales such as this certainly stand Konosuba in good stead when they hope for a third season.

If we look at the popularity of the Konosuba light novels, we see a similar pattern to that of Blue-Ray, albeit with significantly more sales. After its release in August 2019, for example, approximately 100,000 copies of volume 16 were sold, whereas approximately 95,000 copies of volume 17 were sold after its release in May 2020.

Although the series didn’t appear in the top 10 best-selling light novels of 2019, it did in 2018 with a remarkable 630,000 copies sold, making the publisher significant profits. Even by selling more than 100,000 volumes, Konosuba out-ranks other Isekai series such as Wise Man’s Grandchild, which sells approximately 15,000 copies per volume.

From these figures, we can see that Konosuba is a popular series and should be considered for future releases.

A popular element of the anime world is that of figurines, as many fans collect figures of their favorite characters. The Konosuba series saw more than ninety figures created, with the most popular being those of Megumin, Kazuma, Aqua, and Darkness.

It’s estimated that approximately 1,000 different pieces of merchandise were produced for Konosuba, which is more than the extremely popular One Punch Man series, an impressive achievement in the field of anime.

If we look at the popularity of the Konosuba movies, we see more evidence of success, and further indication that we may well see Konosuba season 3 in the near future.

The movie, namely Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! Kurenai Densetsu took approximately 6.5 million USD, and sold an estimated 20,000 Blue-Ray copies in Japan. These figures are remarkable and it is clear that the movie pulled in a sizeable profit for the producers.

Generally, if an anime series does well as a movie, it is likely to return to our screens for another series. However, the opposite is also true. If a movie is unpopular, like Goblin Slayer, it significantly reduces the chances of the series being extended.

Earlier in 2020, a Konosuba game was released and was available to download on mobile devices in Japan. Since its release, the game has been incredibly popular and has been downloaded more than 500,000 times by users.

According to SensorTower, who track the popularity of iOS and Android apps worldwide, it’s estimated that the Konosuba video game has brought in at least 1.5million USD for the creators, marking it as a hugely successful game in the eyes of the players.

In regard to profitability and, it is clear from the examples that Konosuba is a very popular brand and makes a lot of money for the producers and creators, due to its large and loyal fanbase. From this alone, it is clear that should Konosuba season 3 be produced, there would be a large market for it and it is likely to make money.

Would Konosuba Season 3 be Popular?

Would Konosuba Season 3 be Popular?

We have seen that there is ample source material for Konosuba season 3 to be produced, and also we know that it is likely to be profitable. However, we now must also consider how popular Konosuba season 3 would be, if it gets the green light to be produced in the coming months.

Sometimes well-liked anime series decline in popularity for unforeseen reasons, such was the case with Tokyo Ravens, but it’s unlikely to happen with Konosuba.

For example, the Konosuba website has been regularly updated throughout 2020 to meet user demand, and the official Konosuba Twitter page broadcasts daily to its impressive 290,000 + followers.

Moreover, Konosuba is currently trending and performing well on Google, with many people writing and discussing about it because the most recent series has come to an end.

If they were to announce the release of Konosuba season 3, we would see this trend continue throughout the rest of 2020 and into early 2021.

At the end of September 2019, there were nine million print copies of Konosuba in circulation, and with volume seventeen’s release earlier this, we are likely to see this figure rise significantly when data becomes available.

In addition to this, merchandise related to Konosuba is also very popular still, with new merchandise releases announced via social media every month. The merchandise sales were likely boosted by the success of the recent movie, and again in regard to profitability, Konosuba season 3 would prove to be another source of income for the producers.

Conclusion: So, Will We See a Konosuba Season 3?

After exploring the popularity, profitability and source material, three of the key factors in regard to the successful continuation of an anime series; it’s evident that there is scope for the launch of Konosuba season 3 in the near future.

The series is clearly very popular with its loyal fans who have enjoyed the light novels, the movie, and even the mobile game, in addition to the two animated series so far.

We know that Konosuba’s characters are funny, unique, and genuinely well-liked by the fans, which makes this a thriving anime series in Japan.

As well as a successful series, it’s apparent that the creators of Konosuba have built a successful brand as well, which is one of the factors of their undoubtable success.

Because there are many plot elements left to be uncovered, and there are more light story volumes to be animated; Konosuba season 3 must surely be created in the very near future.

Given the fact that 2020 has been a disjointed year due to the COVID19 global pandemic, production on some series may have been postponed.

Therefore, we can realistically hope that Konosuba season 3 will be released sometime in 2021, or perhaps even early in 2021, so fans can prepare themselves for the next installment of their favorite anime show in the near future.
