The premiere “Short Ends” segment of Radio Film School. Short, autonomous radio docs about all things cinema.

The Premiere of “Short Ends”

Radio Film School is a show consisting of segments. “Cinemaverick: A Filmmaker’s Journey” is the headlining segment. Others include “My Earliest Movie Memories,” “War Stories from the Frontlines of Filmmaking” and “How to Be a Black Filmmaker in the 90s” (an odd name, I know, but trust me, you won’t be sorry. :) ) All of these will appear for the most part in each regular Radio Film School bi-weekly episode.

During the interim weeks we will try to fill the gap with “Short Ends” (see the sidebar for the historic meaning of the term). These will be mini radio documentaries, narratives or readings about all things cinema. They cover topics that don’t necessarily fit within the main context of the show. Whereas regular episodes will be in the 15- to 20-minute range, “Short Ends” will usually be 10 minutes or less.

We think this premiere episode is a hoot, but we have some real gems on the way including directing actors, the Wizard of Oz, communicating your intention as a director, and some fictional dramatic readings.

Without further ado, here is “What the Hell Are You?”

The Show Notes

Names mean things. A name can immediately convey information about your race, gender, socio-economic background, whether or not your parents were permanently high in the 60s… In his book “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” Dale Carnegie suggests that you speak a person’s name when addressing them because it is one of the sweetest sounds to their ears.

Because names have such a profound impact on how people perceive us, it stands to reason that the professional titles we have are equally, if not more poignant. Nowhere is that fact more prevalent, and at times as hotly debated or discussed, as among filmmakers (or videograhers, or video producers or… well, I think you see where I’m going with this).

In this episode of “Short Ends”, we look at how some filmmakers call (or don’t call) themselves, why, and whether it even matters.

Who You Heard

The filmmakers you heard this episode were Chris Fenner, Isaac Deitz and Phil Bloom. Here’s Chris’s reel. You tell me… is he a filmmaker?

Perhaps my favorite music video from Isaac was this one for Lecrae.

Here’s the trailer for CNN’s “Wonder List”, shot by Philip.

I can’t believe you haven’t seen this already, but just in case…

And of course, we can’t forget Stefan Sagmesiter’s infamous…

Radio Film School

Host Ron Dawson takes you on a journey to discover what it means to be a filmmaker. A show unlike any other for the passionate and aspiring filmmaker, Radio Film School is more of an audio documentary than a traditional podcast. Think of it as This American Life for filmmakers.

1. The unused portions of an undeveloped motion picture film reel. Frequently used by indie and student films on low budgets.

2. Short, autonomous Radio Film School documentary or narrative episodes about all things cinema.
